A lot depends on the bearing type and what it does.Some of the sleeve type bearings,the grease needs to be pushed out each time to rinse out any garbage. some of the sealed regreasable bearing pobably don't need as much but they have some heavy loads. so we generally go by the book as to when it needs greased. Better to have some grease flying away than to run short.
Have seen this many times, a guy doesn't quite keep up with the grease gun then when the bearing starts to go he greases it like it will help. It just prolongs the inevitable.
