| The sumac will take more attention. Chiseling will split the roots and each root will sprout. Sumac spreads underground anyway.
I mistakenly planted sumac on a corner and it was taking over. Last summer my tenant attacked it with chemicals and by the 3rd or fourth application seems to have gotten rid of the sumac. I think he went way too strong the first couple times and burned the tops off, but before the herbicide could get to the roots. Tordon worked at the rated strength. Some extension bulletins claim that mowing a few times a year for a couple three years will kill sumac. I'm not so sure.
