NE Colorado | Monsanto is saying that it will not enforce variety patents against farmers who save RR1 seed once the patent on the RR1 gene expires.

That seems to be the opposite of what Pioneer wants to accomplish with its compliance checks.
Monsanto must be pretty confident that its RR2 is so superior that no one will want to plant off patent RR1. Or perhaps there is little or no available seed still around from Monsanto RR1 varieties with still active variety patents to be had. Or both.
If Pioneer is going to continue RR1 varieties post patent, I wonder if they will be cheaper than RR2 varieties being that Pioneer wouldn't have to pay Monsanto royalties anymore and could pass the savings on to its customers. If it can offer a competitive product at a much lower price than Monsanto then it shouldn't have to worry so much about compliance checks. | |
