Subject: Re: Water Softener Discharge to Septic

Central Illinois
I currently drain to a floor drain in the basement, which I believe is connected to field tile. I am moving the softener to the garage and connecting to the septic would be easier. I was concerned about salt accumulation around trees near the house although the deposit would be at least two feet below grade. As far as salt usage, that is also dependent on your particular softener as well as its settings. When I lived in town, I had a Water Boss that used 30 gallons of water to regenerate and would use 5-6 bags per year. It drained to a sump hole and was then pumped out on top of the ground near some Pine trees. One tree died after a few years and I always figured it was because I was too lazy to change the drain. The softener I now have uses considerably more water and salt to regenerate while removing about the same amount of hardness. Thanks for the replies. It helps to hear other experiences and opinions.
