I've ridden the train once in the open car. The open cars do have a roof so you are protected some from the weather. Seats are bench front to rear so that you are facing out left or right side. Didn't notice how the enclosed cars were. A must is eye protection though as soot from the train do come by. The youngest in our group at the time was 5 and liked it. You also will have to make sure they keep their hands inside the car as you are very close to the rock walls. Lots of places to spend money in Silverton. We rode the bus back to Durango to help speed up the trip for the younger ones so you might consider that. The kids slept on the way back on the bus so you might consider shortening the trip as the train ride is a long day both ways. It is about 3.5 hours up by train and about 1.5 hours back by bus.

Mesa Verde is a must see of the cliff dwellings and while in the area a drive to the 4 corners should be done. Take in some Indian trading posts along the way. You will also be driving along the Sleeping Ute Mountain near Cortez. I'm not sure about ATV'ing in that area but a little north at Moab, UT is world class off roading and Arches National Park is up there also.

There is a lot of variety of terrain from the desert to the high mountains that are over 14,000 feet near Silverton. A lot of the C.W. McCall songs are about places in that neck of the woods.

Enjoy your trip but for the train ride make sure you have eye protection.
