When welding drill stem pipe and need to fill gaps, it is handy to have a bucket of cement form ties they knock off after stripping cement forms. Not the flat ones, but the round ones, about the size of a fencing spike. We save them for that purpose. I'm sure you could get your local cement guys to save them them for you for a few 6-packs.
