central - east central Minnesota -

russ27 - 11/16/2012 17:52 A 6013 is about the only rod I seem to be able to weld with. I also took a welding course in college. The teacher said he 6013 works good on farm equipment that is covered in "farm stuff".

Stuff covered with rust, paint, grease ect, ect - the rod to use is 6011.
With that said - all welding pieces need to be properly prepped / cleaned.
6013 is a finish type rod - ment for thin metals or finish passes on pipe welding and such. It isn't ment to be a deep penitration type rod. You can make it "dig", but not it's intended use. It is a easy rod to burn and does the job - but, be certin of the weld integruty.
It does NOT like continaments like grease/oil, paint, rust ect, ect . . .
For good solid welds with 6013, you have to watch the slag, as it can get cought in the weld puddle and cause pores/holes and weak welds.
6011 is the all purpose rod and even though it spatters, it makes good depenable strong welds.
Welding with 6011 requires a dipping or ticking action to make "rolled nickle" type beads. Into the puddle then out  . .. .
