Guymon, OK | Just throwing my two cents in, but I learned to weld on the ancient Lincoln Idealarc 250s in my high school's welding shop (which are still made, by the way). I could always weld better on them than the two Millers in the shop. In class we only used 6011 (if strength was desired) and 7014 (if it had to look good), so those are still my go-to rods. MIG welding is easier to learn than stick, and easier to make a pretty bead, but stick welding is nice for field-expedient repairs on dirty, rusty metal that doesn't fit together well.
I have no problem with Miller welders, but I've always been a Lincoln guy. Here at the farm we have a Hobart Ironman 210 MIG welder and a Lincoln Ranger 250GXT engine-driven stick welder. The Hobart isn't the biggest or fanciest machine, but it gets used a lot and does a great job. The Ranger is great for making repairs in the field, or as a portable power source. | |
