In my opinion, the "hands on" needs to be done by professionals. Right or wrong, interacting with strangers is very dangerous. Involvement with organizations that offer assistance to needy individuals is often done in groups, such as meals on wheels, handing out clothing, blankets, etc. There are a variety of organizations available.
