Subject: plumbing questions

East central Iowa

I broke the flange off that the toilet attaches to.  I have a piece that is crescent shaped that is supposed to be a fix.  However they tell me that I would be advised to remove the cast flange and replace it with the PVC fix.

They also told me I should have the floor under the flange to support it.  That would mean cutting up the new floor and putting in a new piece that fit up to the pipe.

Below is a graphic of what I have (top) and what they say I should have (bottom).

Should I cut up the floor, tear out the cast flange and replace it?  It's a rental and I really don't want to be fixing it again.
