We used to tag/vac/band all the newborn calves. Not anymore. I don't touch a calf unless I have to save it or it's 400lbs and in the chute getting worked on for the first time. It's a risk vs reward thing for me. Lots of risk and not much (if any) reward. I seem to have healthier calves this way anyhow.

Years ago my wife got knocked down and stepped on by a cow. Luckily she only got bruised and shaken up, but she could have easily been dead if the cow wasn't still scared of me when I came running over to help. She wasn't even near the calf and the calf wasn't even small. Something just snapped in that cow's brain and it never did calm down until I put it in the freezer a couple of months later. I sure got a lot more selective on docility after that.
