Subject: electric fence and deer?

Driftless SW Wisconsin

I was amazed the other morning to find that the single strand high strength 14 ga steel wire with 6 joule ac charger on it had the wire broken and one of the step-in posts broken. It appeared like something overnight had just pushed right through it. Neighbors said deer this time of year will do that - not see the wire at night get shocked and just keep going. Must have been some buck!

Does make me wonder how much you can rely on electric fencing alone. Fortunately this was just a pasture divider wire about 3 ft high in a field next to the woods. The perimeter is 5 strand barb wire with steel T posts & RR ties at key points. No sign of any damage to the perimeter fence.

Have you seen deer damage a high voltage electric fence? Would 2 strands help?
