Don't know you; don't know the house. How old are you? What are your prospects, wife & kids-wise? DO NOT imagine that any addition to a house will attract the right kind of wife. Wouldn't want you to invest too much in money and emotion in an addition that might not suit some unknowable future requirement(s).

Would this addition be in the same place as the breezeway or off another part of the house? An intermediate solution might be to do footings and foundation for an addition, but just build the breezeway on that foundation for now.

DON'T build a combination mudroom/laundry room! This mudroom would be the most-used entry to the house. Nobody wants a tour of the dirty laundry on their way into the house. A laundry room is a good suggestion. A mudroom is a good suggestion. Some homes force this bad combo situation, but a new addition is an opportunity to do things better.
