Sure long term chopping silage does remove nutrients. But it sounds like its a choice this fall between having only the value of the nutrients plus the insurance versus the value of the corn as silage plus the insurance. If feed is scarce in his area that corn silage might have a great deal of value, enough to replace the nutrients and make a little profit or at least help out a livestock guy that needs feed. Maybe he could get manure included in the deal that would even enhance the fertility of his land. Just something to think about.
