Subject: Re: Rebuiding pickup rear axle?

Alberta, Canada
Back in the day when I pulled wrenches in town we'd do that all the time just swap out the whole rear axle depending on the style, worked very well.

Remember one time though a fellow with a older chev Suburban who's rear diff was shot (bad) when he came in complained it "whined" after we did the swap. So we got another one, ... customer said it whined too so we got him another and again he said it whined. By this time the wreckers we dealt with said no more as they said there was nothing wrong with them!! Of course the customer was probably paranoid about it by now and listened for every little sound. So we sent the truck out to a drive line shop and had them rebuild it ( their specialty) with all new parts and credited him back the cost of swapping out the used rear diffs ...... you guessed it the customer came back and said it still made a whining noise. Thankfully it wasn't our problem anymore and the driveline shop had to take care of it under their warranty. Needless to say we lost our shirt on that job!
