You 100% sure its an open diff? When the clutches wear out in those axles it will act like an open diff, but isnt. Could also be where your whine came from when the clutches failed and contaminated your lube oil.
However, if it is an open diff I'm sure you can handle it. Ideally you'd want a press but you can cut old bearings off the diff case and pinion if you are good with a torch and with enough patience you can carefully pound em back on with a hammer and punch.
