North Central Illinois | Yes, I am amazed how decent the corn looks after what it has been thru. We certainly suffered some damage with the heat but I really think most of it pollinated pretty decent. The early stuff is pollinated very well. We'll know more about that in four or five days. Twenty or thirty years ago 100 degrees at pollination was almost a death sentence for corn. In the past seven or eight years I have seen a lot of corn pollinate in the mid and high 90's. People like to complain how todays hybrids really aren't any better at handling stress than they were in 88 but I disagree. I think they handle stress at pollination a little better. The period following pollination is when the major damage can occur from heat and dryness. The ear will start to abort kernals and kernal depth will start to shallow. If there was rain in the forecast within the next week I would be pretty encouraged. However, since there is nothing in the 7 to 10 day it looks like we will continue to slide. We shall see. | |
