I have a front load Bosch and I think its great. It actually rolls the clothes around in water instead of just filling up with water and wiggling back and forth soaking in its filth. I don't know if it uses any less water than a top load, it runs longer usually an hour to hour 20 depending on how many extra cycles you tell it to run. Extra rinse, allergy etc. Clothes definitely come out drier so the drier doesn't have to run as long which save money on electricity.

I would do my research on current models, but I sure wouldn't just discard them for not being a top load.
