Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning. | Hi Ham, Hope your day was a great one yesterday. Remember that Turkey had terrible casualties too but did manage to repulse the attack at a cost to them also. The human animal is a funny thing though in that it's not unusual for a mortal ememy to become a friend after the combat. Back in the day when individual differences were settled with epees or dueling pistols, matches that ended up with out loss of life would end with participants greatly respecting each other and later becoming friends. I think they came to realize that their mutual common enemies were the bystanders that only wanted to see the show or watch the monkeys in the zoo, so to speak. As the Galipolli campaign drug on, some of the fighters also came to realize that the real enemies were the politicians that had set them against each other and small acts of kindness began to occur between the opposing troops. Much like the Christmas truce that occured along another front in the Great War that was to end all wars. Later wars have also had some examples of such behavior Franz Stigler & Charlie Brown is another good example: http://www.flyingcarrot.com/Brown%20And%20Stigler.htm Folks who have never fought have a hard time understanding and coming to grips with this. |
