Years and years ago I saw the movie Gallipoli about the battle and how absolutely botched the whole thing was due to miscalculations at higher levels, well out of th econtrol of men and their officers on the ground. Much courage but senseless loss. Another great movie about World War One and the roll of soldiers from Australia and New Zealand was The Lighthorsemen. Anybody who enjoyed War Horse should try to see that one, too, if they have the chance. It details what one historian described as the last great calvary charge in history. If you've ever wondered what "under the guns" means, this movie illustrates the phrase in graphic detail.
