western iowa,by Denison
that's the way I trained myself-I would be after the most efficent gain not the fastest gain-holding there dry matter intake at 95-97%is the most feed efficent in my operation-its kinda a real thin line of feed consumption-I have 370 days to put on 700# to make my cattle weigh 1100# to reach my breakeven-sometimes if you do not compensate for a increase in dmi-they will set there selves to not eat over 20-22# a day total feed-and other times you can increase there dmi a little up every week-having xtra bunk space 18-24inch's allows me to do that-keep trying to tweak it every year-last year the fats averaged over 1280# on all my cattle-that came in at 425# average!
Just my own program that I have tried to tweak thru the years-my main goal is to market my crops thru the 400# heifers and be able to raise more # per acre or you might say-takin that corncob to a return !
How many cattle does your feedman feed?I'm not that good at spotting a sick calf that does not come to the bunk, and even worse at spotting a good feedman-seem;s they all leave shaking there heads wondering how I stay in business as the text book does not mold me to there cheat sheet.
My biggest problem will be training Adam to feed them on a daily basis-as I want to take a vacation for 10 days?
