We fought the same thing for a long time. Walmart would take my debit card all the time but deny a check. Turns out, bank reused a closed account number that had a bad check history. Walmart's check clearer had that account number blocked. Go to your bank and get account number changed.
Forgive me if someone else already suggested this.
