We've found the same thing with our front wheel assist. Right between the front tires on the hood is ideal. To far ahead and the antenna is too sensitive, farther back and it gets progressively less sensitive. You can play with your GPS "look ahead" to try to make a position work but we've found we're better off getting the antenna in the spot we prefer and are used to.
