Subject: RE: soil samples

Rolla, ND
Would your brother buy fertilizer without a scale being used? Why or why not? How about if it was just a white granule and no analysis given, would he buy mystery fertilizer?

Would he go without a fuel guage on his pickup?

Does he care what the temperature is?

A soil test gives you a general idea of where you are. Now sometimes you go further or not as far much like with the pickup, but it's still helpful to know.

Not magic, just information useful to manage your farm. Note though that if you have no management ability in that area, the information is pretty worthless. Different farmers compete in different ways, one guy is a machinery nut, another guy is all soil in general invest in your strength and try to manage your weakness. No reason for you and your brother to be the same. Give each other the freedom for both of you to do what you are good at and you both will be better off.
