Subject: Re: Treating infant ear infections

Ontario, Canada
I would not attempt to try any at home remedy/alternative treatments without the okay from a doctor (and I don't consider "naturopaths" doctors). 3 ear infections in a 7 month old is A LOT, I would definately ask to be seen by an ear, throat and nose specialist. What medication are you currently using? I would try another round of antibiotics and then seriously consider tubes. My oldest son developed a lot of ear infections after the age of 1 and we ended up getting tubes... best decision ever. Some children are more prone to them and it can cause severe damage to their hearing/ear health. Tubes are tiny little plastic tubes, smaller than a grain of rice that are inserted into the ear drum. They allow any fluid/infections to drain, protecting the ears and also relieving the severe PAIN many of these kids experience. Once the ears stop having infections the tubes will fall out... in our son they fell out about a year later (found them on his pillow). My son has never had an ear infection since he had tubes put in and he's now 12 years old. I remember taking him to the hospital and he was in the OR for maybe 10-15 minutes and came out fine eating ice cream (he wasn't "put out" it was more like a twillight sleep? There may be different ways they do it but in my experience it was a very simple procedure with zero post op pain).

I also found this online...

The decision to place ear tubes is not based on age, but more on other indications, such as:

1.Fluid persisting for 3 months or more.
2.Four or more ear infections within 6 months.
3.Recurrent infections affecting hearing (hearing loss) or speech.
4.Complications or ear infections - mastoiditis or meningitis.
5.Immune deficiency with recurrent infections.
6.Abnormal anatomy such as in children with Down’s syndrome or cleft palate.
