I agree that I don't like a mat in the spring because it won't dry out in our heavy clay. We tried vertical till disc in fall on 1/3rd of our corn stalks going to beans because the ground is so hard in the spring. Where we fall vert disced it stayed damp and had sidewall compaction issues. Had to replant 50% of those acres because of uneven stands. I wouldn't want to plant coc no till corn here with chopped stalks either. No chopping corn heads for us either!

I don't understand how chopping your stalks is going to reduce tire wear. You'll still have corn stumps to drive over. Are you trying to reduce tire wear on your grain drill?
