Schroeder, I don't think I could have said it any better! Especially the part about the plant flexing it's ear. I was always taught and read from university studies that the plant starts to decide ear size by knee high and sometimes earlier than that. We plant Croplan, Pioneer, NK, Mycogen, Dynagro, and Dekalb. They are all moving away from true flex ear hybrids. But our rep who I trust told us that the plant will still flex just not as much as before. From what I can understand moving to more fixed ear hybrids are the only way they can continue to increase the yield curve. To me it only makes sense that the breeder creates the best yielding hybrid whether that's fixed or flex I don't think it matters to the breeder. They can do plenty to the price per bag of corn seed to make up for population differences. If it doesn't yield the best than I am more than happy to move to a different company.
