| We are fairly close to a large poultry production area; and litter is usually available to growers. Most of them will stockpile during the year and then spread in the fall following the harvest. Some may apply it in spring, even following emergence of crops in some cases. Rate is usually 2 tons per acre; and I am not aware of any variable rate application. Our biggest challenge is knowing the actual nutrient content of the litter which varies significantly from one farm to another and from one poultry company to another, mainly since they have variable time between cleanout. Some remove litter to the ground; and some just take off the top layer. Not very scientific I know; but then the product is not consistent enough to use more advanced methods yet. | |
