Subject: Badger-Hay

Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot
Good clean alfalfa here is bring $200+. Most of the growers I work with, and my own hay, is in heavy 3 tie bales. Just what the export guys are looking for. Clean and green in that package has been at $250, regardless of test. We are really late this year, and while I don't think the test numbers will be that bad, no one has tested much. We are going to be locked in a three cut year, so it doesn't really matter much. We'll cut it when it is ready.

Dairy guys have been trying to buy anything that is just a little cheaper, but have come as high as $240. Dairy buyers are shipping 3-400 miles south and export guys the same south to over 400 miles north if that gives you an idea on freight.

Like you, lot of guys are thinking why plant hay with wheat this high. Hay acres are down all over, and yield is poor on what is established. Might be interesting. Been trying to find more hay for dairy buyers, but they just can't compete with the export guys by about $10 right now.
