southern MN | Yea, I'd try to get a firm understanding of the state laws from my legal guy.
Then walk in and try to discuss it pleasently (as possible considering...), but know what it is you can demand, and what you can say will happen if they don't follow the law.
At some point you should get your money back for work done last fall, or get to farm it another year, but it can take some effort & costs on your part....
