Lincoln County. NC | If the shifter is grinding, the PTO clutch isn't disengaging, plain & simple. Typical causes are a worn transmission disc, stuck PTO disc, delaminated and stacked pieces of the PTO disc lining. You can decrease the pedal freeplay to an absolute minimum and see if the PTO stage unloads. The tractor WILL need to be split to adress this problem. Sooner, and you may get away with replacing the friction discs, Later, and the entire pressure plate assembly may be damaged.
Continuing to grind the PTO into gear WILL damage the sliding gear and its mate. You then will have repairs to make in two areas.
THe factory service manual can be purchased here: http://www.dmcretail.com/newholland/Default.aspx
EDIT: Just read another post by you on another forum. It seems a more complete description of your problem is detailed there. Does the PTO shift into gear without grinding, then grind and disengage when the clutch is released, or does it grind while attempting to shift into gear? Different symptoms, different answer.
