For brand, use tri-tronics. I've used 3 or 4 different brands, DTS, Dogtra, Sport Dog, and a few cheap ones.... Tri-Tronics is the only one that lasts.... I've had my sportsman dual collar setup for about 2 years now works great. Sportsman I had before that was about 3 or 4 years old... then got another dog so sold the old one to a neighbor, and bought one that will control up to 3 dogs. Neighbor is still using my old one.

Collars are waterproof, and my labs test that out all the time. A collar is only as good as the trainer, it won't magically fix the dog, you will have to have patience and work with it. But if you shock the dog a few times, they will figure it out, then won't need the collar anymore... but you have to be consistent for them to learn... My dogs need a refresher every now and then, but that's about it.
