NW IL
I think you are thinking too much. Every year something happens to the corn crop so it is not perfect. This year the most likely largest limiting factor was too much water at some point in time in many areas. You can see the yellow spots in many areas of the Country where this occured. Cooler nights may have helped the yield this year but the biggest reducer of yield was just too much water at some point in time for a large section of the corn belt. Agronomists like too make excuses why there corn did not do good. Corn is a plant that likes 87 degree tempatures. The ear weight will decrease as populations are increased. There is a steady trend of increased populations. This should be adjusted for in your ear weights over the years. Personally I would take hot and wet over cool and wet any year. Remember 1993. That would be a good year to look at ear weight and temperature, most likely it will ruin your theory. Here in our part NW IL we will have a good corn crop.
