I don't think it is just as simple as "skimp". A lot of the crop you are looking at now is a function of when fertilizer was applied and how it was applied in addition to how much. Some folks applied a lot of fertilizer (did not skimp) early and with the rains it was gone.I believe there are two reasons for the uneveness of the corn in some fields: 1) wet feet 2) fertilizer is gone.
I think this is a year when side dressing really paid. There is much more to it than just the amount applied. jmho. Based on my own corn, I am now a fervent believer in applying 1/3 at or just ahead of planting and 2/3 side dressed, for me on 60" centers.
