Subject: Re: Corn Survey Question - "skimping" on fertilizer

Driftless SW Wisconsin

I don't think it is just as simple as "skimp".  A lot of the crop you are looking at now is a function of when fertilizer was applied and how it was applied in addition to how much.

Some folks applied a lot of fertilizer (did not skimp) early and with the rains it was gone.I believe there are two reasons for the uneveness of the corn in some fields: 1) wet feet  2) fertilizer is gone.

I think this is a year when side dressing really paid.  There is much more to it than just the amount applied. jmho.

Based on my own corn, I am now a fervent believer in applying 1/3 at or just ahead of planting and 2/3 side dressed, for me on 60" centers.
