We've seen a lot of purpling over the years with the combination of a stretch of cool weather with either very dry or very wet soils. The roots just can't keep up with the demand of the plant for P (or other nutrients), so the sugars accumulate with nowhere to go and create the purple colour. If the corn doesn't snap out of it with a bit of moisture and heat, then you start to worry about it!
