If CRW is presently a problem in your area, or is rumored to be encroaching, then I would only choose dry insecticide thru the boxes you can buy as in #1. Regent failed in this area (NE IL) many years ago and is not used for serious CRW threats. SmartBoxes are an alternative, but as you suggest they are more complicated & expensive.

Keep the boxes in good shape & you can resell them some day if the oppurtunity arises.
