Old timers always said to plant north - south as the plants would receive more sunlight as the sun traveled from horizon to horizon. We don't pay much attentionto the saying, just try to plant so we can park the trucks along a road or drive if possible.

As for standability, last fall it didn't matter if it was planted east-west or north-south as to whether it went down or not or how bad it was down.
