The only other option that I can think of would be for the two of you to form a partnership to operate those two units of land.  That would allow him to bring his APH into the partnership and combine it with the new unit.

I think you could do it for just the two farms in question, but I'm not sure.  When we did this, we combined all the land that each of us farmed as well as all equipment that was owned individually.
