Northeast Indiana (Auburn) | I raised my 1888 farm house up one foot in 2008 and dug a new basement under it and added about 600 square foot more basement and living area to the original foot print. I went with 9' high walls which will net 8'8" after the floor is poured. My walls are 8" thick 5000PSI concrete. After duct work I still have 8' ceilings under the new part and 8'4" ceiling under the old part. Since I have a son with CP that is in a wheel chair I poured my garage floor 1" lower than the finished house floor and sloped a 3'X3' area at the garage/house door so the two floors are flush at the walk door. My garage is 32'X42" so it took a lot of pea gravel to get this done but was well worth it. After doing this I would never build a garage with a step to get into the house. Also when building a new house cut a piece of plywood the size of a EMS gurney, put it on wheels (or carry it flat) thru out your house plan. We are all getting older. |
