I find it really depends on the farm, I actually do both. On really variable farms with diffrent soil zones and production capacities I will use a zone based sample program. If the farm is generally a soil consistent farm we will sample in a grid. 2/3 of our ground are sampled in a grid program and the balance in a zone program, I personally prefer grid sampling in a 5 acre grid.
