Jeff, they don't kill birds, in some places the land value is almost cut in half, and yes I guess you get used to seeing them after a while.  But you can't look anywhere without seeing a windmill now.  I guess the windmills keep any new subdivisions from popping up.  I also posted alot of information above which is worth reading.  Also, I agree 100% with Silver Shoes, a nuclear power plant makes so much more sense.  They are constantly repairing or maintaining these things which I imagine is not free.
