Subject: Re: DNA genetic sequence for B73 corn inbred announced this week

Near Richmond, IN
B73 was developed out of Iowa Stiff Stalk Synthetic at Iowa and released in 1972. In my 1989 handbook there were 80 inbreds developed out of the same B73 type SSS so they would have some relationship to B73. I would guess that now there would be a few hundred inbreds with some genetic relationship to B73, most are probably not used anymore. I'm sure there are several that are used now that have very closely related genetics to B73, each with slight improvements.
