Subject: Applying liquid manure today in SW Minnesota (pics)

Driftless SW Wisconsin

Jake, you are not alone in trying to figure out how to apply manure before freeze up. I am in SW MN over the weekend working with applying liquid hog manure with our new 6000 coulter. Ground is not frozen but soil temps are cool and have been for some time. Won't be too long. Still lots of corn to harvest in this area.

We finally got to run this afternoon and evening in some very heavy bean stubble and recently harvested but otherwise untouched approx 200 bu corn stalks. This is a coulter-only setup and my first experience with liquid manure.

Here are some pictures:

  1. basic setup during dry runs prior to applying manure.
  2. last clean picture of setup while filling tank
  3. Picture in HEAVY bean stubble going with the bean rows with the row cleaner set very aggressively.
  4. another picture in same bean stubble but with the row cleaner set lighter
  5. a picture as it is getting darker in heavy corn stalks going with the row
  6. two pictures of the more or less final setup with minimal disturbance going at an angle to the cornstalks.

It seems the sun is setting too early these days!

What we finally agreed on is a minimal soil disturbance approach. The last few pictures were putting down approximately 6000 gal.acre according to the owner and at about 7 mph. There is little visible sign of the manure and almost no odor.

We will be running tomorrow afternoon with this setup and will try to have some daylight photos. It seems to me that by getting this very nice liquid manure down under the residue and (almost) completely covered/in contact with soil we turn it from a disposal "problem" to a valuable source of fertility. It doesn't seem like much if any would be lost the way we are sealing it in in the later photos in cornstalks.

Overall it looks like the 6000 can get through this residue and place the manure in heavy corn residue with minimal disturbance and seal in fairly high rates of manure at reasonable forward speeds and moderate hp requirements.
