Subject: Re: Why Grow Wheat? - A Rant

N East Sask, Canada
The high inputs for 2009 mean most will lose money on most crops. So what does one grow to rotate with canola? All pick the same crop and that price will be crap. Nobody will grow oats at $1.30/ bu. Canary seed is a disaster. Malt barley selection scarce due to mildew. Hogs and cattle unprofitable means low feed demand= low price. In this area, it's 50% canola, rotation says a cereal. I heard today a farmer going to do canola-snow-canola because nothing is profitable. Shame to hope another farmer on the planet has a crop failure so I can get a price to make a profit. Excess supply means world farmers did a great job, deserving a bonus because people will not be hungry. But what does the market do? Punish us with a lower price! Some sick system !
