| Your not alone! Eastern Ontario tends to grow a bit of spring wheat simply because winter wheat is risky on the heavier clays. I generally can make it work in my area however only if I can get it in early enough. It used to be easy after canola, but I quit growing that in favour of soys. I'll have to find a short season soybean so I can no-till winter wheat in. Winter wheat is just a bit easier to manage than spring wheat and it has much greater yield potential.
The last 2 years have been a disaster for spring wheat as head scab (fusarium) forced most deliveries to feed grade or worse sample grade. Many folks will not grow this stuff again They'll just stick to corn/sb rotation and if they need hay they'll direct seed it. | |
