| So, I'm a young-ish farmer who's moved back to the family farm and have been dabbling with sheep. I think I've got the basics down and want to move into quality registered breeding stock. I would really really like to have an OPP and Johnes free flock and maybe get certified - however my dad also keeps cattle on the farm. He never has and never will do any testing or biosecurity, and there's no way to keep the two species totally separate and sanitize boots, tires, etc. I know Australia has a Johnes killed vaccine, but of course it's not available in the US. I'm trying to see if it's possible to compound a Johnes vaccine but haven't had any luck yet.
Assuming that there's no vaccine for immunization, I don't see any realistic way to keep the sheep from eventually contracting it (I'm assuming the cattle have Johnes until proven otherwise), and I'll be pushing water up a hill trying to keep equipment sanitized. I don't like it, but I guess I should just ignore Johnes until I inherit the farm and can hit the reset button - presumably with a new flock. How would yall approach this and do you see anything I'm missing? | |
