| Agree with what Russ has said, especially believing those that have never paid a bill with a cattle check. Wish I had a dollar for every time a producer has said to me their late "tail end" light calves brought nearly as much per head as their heavier calves with less death loss from weather.
The land grant colleges can get a great deal of funding from the packers. What the packers might say they want and what might be best for your operation are not necessarily the same thing. Unless you sell beef direct or retain ownership on your calves, your product is cattle. Pounds times dollar value minus expenses. There is no set "best" formula as to what that combination might be from one operation to another. I know people that sold good cow herds because they believed you had to calve in the winter.
