Western Ontario
We calve Jan-Feb and then May-June. The heifers we breed for the May group are only exposed for 24 days, bull goes in August 1 and comes out August 24. We preg check Oct 1 and any opens can go with other grass yearlings we have and make a decent package. Typically expose 25 and get 20 bred, yes we’ve had some very nice heifers that are open, definitely need to have bulls semen tested and watch close for any bull issues. It has really reduced the amount of stragglers in the main herd, we run a 45 day breeding season with the rest of the herd (which results in at least 60 days of calving) bull to cow ratio in the 20-25:1 range. If you have extensive pastures and maybe don’t see them all the time might not be the best route.
