MB, Canada | Calving's gone really smooth this year--I'm currently sitting at 80% calved at a month in. Kind of makes me want to shorten the breeding season to something like 45 days next year. I would say the average age of the 20% left would definitely be closer to 10-12 years old than 5, but I still wouldn't want too many good young cows dropping out due to something like catching mid first cycle, dropping their pregnancy, and then not having a chance to catch again in time like they might in a 60-70 day window.
What's your experience with a short breeding season? Do the later young cows tend to disappear over time due to the culling of those genetics, or do you always end up with a certain number of younger cows that just catch a bad break and miss exposure by a week? | |
