Guess I will worry about deflation when it happens. Thinking about the 80’s kept a lot of farms too small to be viable for the next generation.


By the time it happens it’s way past too late to worry, the bank will call your note and you go get a town job. I’m not saying the 80s are here right now, but don’t just throw caution to the wind. There’s a level of risk that’s right for each operation. If you’re young and don’t have a pot to pee in it’s a lot easier to bet it all. Not out much if it doesn’t pan out. A multigenerational farm doubling down and losing it all just for the sake of getting bigger doesn’t make much sense in comparison.

No one knows what the future holds and that’s what makes agriculture exciting. Jumping in at the right minute after missing a few opportunities keeps a guy coming back for more. Meanwhile, mistakes get made that hold a person back a few years and experience is gained. $3000 bred heifers in ‘14 come to mind. Betting on $8 corn had the same outcome. Might happen, might not; have a plan you can live with either way.
